Well in Eve, you can see how corporations are self regulated and successful.

I would think a crime MMO as a cross between EVE, GTA, with a splash of Mafia.

I think any questions of a crime MMO succeeding will be answered once we all try GTA4 multiplayer.

Come on, people love playing cops and robbers. You won't be able to do normal MMO crap like mana bars or rat-slaying, but having a city contested between the police force and organized crime? Sounds like a hoot.

It exists already sort of. If you play SA-MP (San Andreas - MultiPlayer), there is a game mode where there are the cops, and the normal citizens. When the citizens commit a crime, their wanted level raises, and its pretty much either high or low, and on the minimap they turn dark orange for high or pale orange for low. The cops can then chase them and arrest them or issue them with a ticket if they are on low that they can pay, or if they dont after a certain amount of time their wanted level goes to high and they can be arrested. The cops can kill the criminals, but there is a fine. Its awesome fun, and it works wellish xD, so yes, they would work, although without the leveling.

"most of the fun in [single-player] games is usually the destructive environments and generally screwing with the AI ...."

Destructive environments will be difficult to implement, but on the AI side, Dave Jones has said one of the central design goals of APB is improve the same fun experience by replacing AI with other players.

The other important element you only get with an MMO is persistence. It's a totally different experience when you go to sleep at night while the battle for your city turf in still raging....

I hope they get it right with APB. I'm looking forward to trying it out.
