I'm pretty sure if there were any airbourne means of transportation available within Middle Earth, Gandolf would have made it available to Frodo on his voyage to Mount Doom.

Personally, I hope never to see such things in LOTRO. Those of us who look elsewhere than WoW for our MMO fix do so for a reason. Copying WoW is not the way to beat it.

Why not have a quest where you befriend an eagle and then he's your "friend" who happens to let you ride wherever you want? Give them a randomly generated name, have them look different from each other, and...tada?

But it may be "too much" if everyone just happens to have a friend eagle...

I don't think it would be appropriate for the setting, and would cheapen it somehow.

Why not just add an orbiting space station that you could beam up to, then beam down to wherever you like? And maybe give the hobbits phasers while we're at it.

Oneiroi - I think the problem with that is that having every player in the game, or even more than one player in the game, with their own personal eagle would be overdoing it. While on an individual basis it MIGHT fly to befriend an Eagle who has so little self respect that he/she is willing to drop what he/she is doing at all times to fly someone around the world, there are hundreds of thousands of players in this game. It just wouldn't work. Besides, as I said, Eagles have their own communities, family, and culture. Why would they drop everything they're doing to cart us around? It would almost be like slave labor.

If the Eagles couldn't bother to fly Frodo to Mount Doom to destroy the ring, I doubt they're going to do it for us. It's not like the fate of Middle Earth lies on a chain around OUR necks. At least not yet =P

What Oneiroi isn't getting is that the Eagles don't make friends. They are a proud, intelligent race and would rather drop you off a cliff than shuttle you all over Middle-Earth. The only reason they barely tolerated Gandalf is because he saved their leader's life.

The Eagles of Middle-earth should not become our beasts of burden. They are agents of fate in the stories of Middle-earth. Unexpected aides to help our heroes. Presumably, since they are servants of Manwe, they show up to help only when they are necessary to preserve the safety of Middle-earth.

I can however see us getting one nice ride on the back f a great Eagle as the reward of a long quest line. One shot and that's it. But hopefully make it instanced so we can repeat the scene any time we want afterwards.

I'm with Steve on that. I think it would be OK if there was some circumstance where you got a one-time ride on an eagle to do something extremely important. And if it was instanced, which it probably would be, you'd be able to repeat it in the reflecting pool (like the walk with Frodo, I've done that a few times myself for fun).

Anyway, unless Christopher Tolkien comes out with some long-hidden notes from his father in the next year or so that details flying creatures that accept rides from humans, I think it's safe to say we can cross out flying mounts as an option in this game.

Author did a nice job there of logically dispelling any notion that flying mounts could ever come to LOTRO. As it should be.
