I love FFXI for the exact reasons this article goes into. I have a static party with my 2 roommates and 3 of our buddies and we have the best time playing, grinding doesn't feel like such a chore when you play with people you know.

You're really making my miss FFXI! It was one of my favorite MMOs. I never did get the chance to get a static party going, but I bet it would be tons of fun.
Unfortunately, at this time, I'm unable to play due to finances and my gaming PC gone kaput. I'd love to get back into it again, though.
*sigh* Man, I really miss FFXI....

Not to bash the main article, but what is the real reason to play here?

Static parties? they can make almost any mediocre game fun. And let's not forget that you can't just walk to the store and buy 5 friends who have a desire to play FFXI. This is an important point because there are so many mmo's on the market that these 5 friends might want the rest of your group to play instead.

Now, as for the downsides to FFXI, you named very few. How about the fact that you cannot modify / customize the interface on the PC? Its absurd in this day and age to restrict users to such an extent.

Or how about abilities with overly long cool down times? one use every 5 min on a newbie skill? And the skill doesn't do something amazingly powerful? so I get to watch auto attack for the next 5 min till its ready again huh? no thx

Next on the block is the fact that the login is not industry standard. No, in this game you need an account for another program (Play online launcher if I recall correctly) just so you can then launch FFXI and put in separate login details.

I'm sorry, I can tolerate these small things from an indie developer perhaps. But when we are talking about somebody with the size, funding and experience of Square, this is inexcusable.

Its hard to see past any of this to the cream filling of FFXI. Now ask yourself, why should you (and now 5 of your friends) be forced to tolerate such things for a chance to squeeze some enjoyment out of the game?

To close, if I could go *poof* and make 5 friends who have the same schedule and interest in a game appear, I could enjoy just about every AAA mmo on the market, and most of the smaller ones.

I don't see how this is a post about FFXI as much as one advocating static parties for ALL mmo's.

I think what Colin is saying is that FFXI is a great game, but it requires a group, has a high degree of complexity and can be very harsh in its penalties for failure. If you want to offset these major deterrents, a static party is just what the doctor ordered.

Contrast this to a game like WoW, where a group is not required, the level of complexity is somewhat lower and is much milder in penalties for failure. Sure, a static party would be fun, but it is not such a huge difference from playing solo as in FFXI.

As far as the drawbacks you mentioned, they may be dealbreakers for you, but for most players they are quite minor. An extra step to login? Annoying at most. You can't customize the interface? True, it would be nice if you could do this, but remember that FFXI is cross platform. It has long been a design decision to not allow things on the PC that you can't do on the PS2 or Xbox.

You know if you're social enough and meet/talk to people in FFXI, you can prove that you're a good player. No real need for 5 other friends one or two will do. Many of us have forged alliances and made brothers of those we met in Vanadiel. I play many MMOs, but as many times as i've said this, it bears saying once more, " There is no other game with more accomplishment then FFXI". I think some people look at the grind and see nothing else, but it's important to see the game around the grind, the teamwork it takes to get past it and the smiles on the face of those that stand as champions onto the end challenges.. This isn't some Korean MMO where you stand there alone(or grouped w/ other people that let exp flow into you) and bash your hotkeys till you level up, just to goto the next area and bash hotkeys. This isn't wow where you forsake the existance of those around you untill 70 repeatedly grinding quests. This is an experience about the people be they Japanese, American or European.

Stand proud fellow men and women of Vanadiel, we are of a world some fear and some shun for their weakness. I expect some WoW player to respond to this with "WoW is a social experience look at Raids"... I was tiered in WoW:BC... be honest with yourself, WoW is a game where healers watch hp bars and everyone else presses hotkeys, when have you need to look to those at your side..truly?

Late to the party I know, but I wanted to agree with Galaji. Having a static group makes any MMO fun. You could remove every reference in this article to FFXI and replace it with 'Everquest' and it would be just as applicable.

The fact that you HAVE to have a static party to make the game fun is kind of a deal breaker for most people. I have enough friends interested in MMOs to have a static group -- did it in WoW for a long time. But . . . we still had plenty of times where we didn't have enough people on and had to solo or do other stuff. If that isn't an option, a subscription to the game is kind of a waste.
