Well.... potentially you could attach a linkset to your avatar to get an idea of its RC. Newbies do it a lot - why not the rest of us? ;)

Very interesting! It would be nice if each person could know ARC and Script time.

Ouch. I tested this with my avatar and I get a ARC of 4361. If I remove my hair it drops to 29. This is on a system with the following configuration.

CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2814 MHz)
Memory: 2047 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 8800 GTS/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
OpenGL Version: 2.1.1

On my older system with significantly lower power I got the same numbers on every avatar in my test area. IN most cases exactly the same numbers.

CPU: AMD K7 (Unknown model) (1293 MHz)
Memory: 1024 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (Build 3790)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce3/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
OpenGL Version: 1.5.7

Based on this I suspect that this number is not an actual rendering time, but may be something like a count of the number of polygons (or something similar) in each avatar.

Not just polygons, but also flexibility, texture animations, transparencies - the works.

This is a great feature and a bit of very worthy information to know. Since ARC has the potential to impact everyone's SL experience I could see it, over time, becoming a necessary consideration for builders (of anything, not just clothes) across the grid. This little innovation has the potential to take the concept of "low prim" to an all new level. I hostess at events in SL 5-6 nights a week and I know from experience that, as certain avatars pass me walking into the club, the lag in their wake can be palpable and intense. Cheers to whoever came up with this feature and boos to anyone who thinks their freedom is infringed if asked to be courteous to their fellow residents if asked to reduce their ARC.

Well the tradition has always been a "My land, my rules".

People gravitate to communities with compatible rule-sets, and avoid those that they don't agree with - or that they feel are applied capriciously.

Capricious application of rules pretty much guts a community, however many existing, strong communities have formed around firm rule-sets, evenly applied that people agree to abide by from a sense of enlightened self-interest.

@ Tateru Nino 4-14-2008 @ 9:48AM:

I want to have added a display which shows ARC for builds per parcel. This would be a total for builds only, but I suppose you could also have a column giving builds + avatars in that parcel.

Would there be any use for a display giving total ARC load on the viewer? Something like that would need a breakdown explaining where that number came from: builds, avatars, WindLight TM, etc. Or would LL say that WindLight and other environmental overhead comes under the heading of "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain." *giggle*

Hey:
Perhaps we are forgetting another new feature of 1.20. When you mute someone, their avatar turns grey. I assume the ARC goes very low then. So, like the newbie who sits in the welcome area spiting out sounds, folks will get muted if they go crazy with their ARC.

Hmmm muted avatars do indeed go grey but their ARC doesn't change. I wonder if you still get the performance improvement though, since their prims and textures clearly aren't being visibly rendered.

Ah, no luck in seeing this. SL 1.20 RC sadly messes up the avatar movement, the UI, and the camera, by trying to do all three things simultaneously with the mouse :) I blame Apple's Mighty (NOT!) Mouse, but there might be another issue lurking beneath my Preferences.

Still, the issue is interesting enough and worth analysing. I fear the "ARC Police" in the future, but I can very well understand how useful this feature might be...

I fear the ARC police also -- but at least such "policing" can now be based on reality, rather than someone's potentially mistaken ideas about what creates lag.

WOW @ #26 ... Nightbird, that's a great idea! This could either be in the viewer or maybe someone could develop a gadget something like the sim performance meters that are available. It would be a great thing for a club owner or sim owner to be able to watch ARC change over time as avatars come in.
