I bet someone, maybe a college professor, could turn LOTRO into a good novel. Maybe even a couple of them.

I've actually read some of the Warcraft novels but I think the ones I read might pre-date WOW. They were adequate as entertainment, but a pretty good way to get the backstory.

I've read both of the City of Heroes novels. They were ok, but it felt like both authors didn't really play the game.

Yeah, it's pretty weird that Massively defaults to a WoW icon. You'd think they could get someone to make an M icon or something. If I was a WOW player wouldn't I be reading WOWInsider?

We wrote up a quick and dirty guide on comments that you can find here:

It tells you how to change your avatar picture too. We are working on a new "default" icon. It just hasn't happened yet.

I guess I should mention that the first CoH novel does give a good background story on the two biggest signature characters in the game. The second also gives a lot of background info, but some of the info didn't match up with other stories and in one case, with the previous book. All minor stuff though.

They weren't exactly MMO novels, but I did read "Lord of the Clans" (about Thrall's coming of age etc) and "Day of the Dragon". The former was simply "ok", nothing to write home about.

The latter was filled with archetypes and tired fantasy tropes. That in itself is not a bad thing, but the characters were also bland, cardboard, and uninteresting.

If a decent author were to write an MMO themed novel, then yes I would check it out... but so far I haven't seen that.

There's an EVE novel coming out some time in the future (hopefully the near future) and I'm pretty confident that it will keep in line with the whole EVE story and background. The only way it might not would be if it states whether there's a crew on any of the ships, but then not even the developers seem to be able to agree on that so it's not too much of a problem.
