MMOs were a natural progression from RPGs and user created maps in starcraft as well as the mind numbing hack and slash of Diablo 2... So I was born to play ;)

I started with EvE Online over a year ago, but I didn't "get it" until I joined a corporation. That was a double-edged sword, since I enjoyed the greater depth of the game but also realized that there are strange people out there with stranger demands on your time. Communicating with textboxes, email, and Teamspeak can be amazingly limited.

Still do the first-person shooters in single-player games, but yeah, the MMOs draw you back.

My gateway drug...err MMO was EverQuest, back when the first Expansion was released. I remember there being a group of guys I used to play organized sports with who would tell me about this online RPG they were all into. Me, being a complete idiot at the time...couldnt grasp the concept of how you actually could buy and sell items for these RPGs online.

After plunging into EQ and finding myself in a humorous situation(anyone who played with the original EQ UI knows what I mean) since I not only was a newb to the MMO scene, but to RPGs all together. It was a leaning curve that I'll probably never experience again on that degree, but once I got into it no other game genre's have been able to really give the same sensations.

I can officially consider myself a MMO Junkie...

EverQuest+ 9 Expansions
Everquest 2 + 3 Expansions
World of Warcraft + 1 Expansion
Vanguard
Lord of the Rings Online
The Matrix Online
Tabula Rasa
Project Entropia

Asherons Call did it for me. I love ranged fighters, and naturally veer towards them in any rpg. I loved fletching different types of arrow in AC and knowing which to use against which enemy. Also was one of a couple of games I played with mates I no longer lived near.

What have I played since? Anarchy Online (from beta), EQ & EQ2, WoW, EVE, DAoC, D&D Online, Sword of the New World (beta only), Tabula Rasa (from beta), LoTRO (from beta), Maple Story, PotBS and currently a bit of Mythos (which is in beta).

i still believe we're talking about a genre that has plenty of room in which to develop though.

Ultima Online
I still miss the player housing, the fact that items could placed on the ground and really some great PvP.
Unfortunately it failed at questing/dungeons and class balance.

I must be showing my age, but my first MMO was "Meridian 59". That was hardcore PVP there, my friends.

Well I started playing MUDs (which went from playing to building to admining to running my own and coding) but my first graphical MMO was FFXI (I resisted Evercrack from launch)

MxO is what popped my MMO cherry.

It alot of ways, I loved that game more than any other MMO that I've played (SWG, EQ2, WoW, TR, CoH).

Sorry, but I do not agree. I was and still am a typical console gamer. I have tried out games like World of Warcraft, Anarchy Online and Lord of the rings Online. They are cool games, specially LotRO, but none of them could get me to play longer than two month... then it pissed me off that I had to pay like 10 to 13 Bucks just for walking from a to b for hours.

Online-Communities are cool, but they do not only exist in MMOGs...

Though I had played MUDs for years, EverQuest was my first plunge. I avoided that and Ultima Online until my roommate came home with two copies of Ruins of Kunark and said "I'll play if you play".

Oh, dark days. I think I've been in at least one MMO at all times since then.

Sunset was a sad day... then I found SWG... then they bork it.. I
digress.
I hear there is a working emulator for EnB now.

wow, to the guy who said MxO... I'm impressed you played it an stuck with the genre. :P

EverQuest. Ruins of Kunark did it, from then on, I was hooked through the Plains of Power era. Since then I've played a list that I won't bore you all with, but SWG had the most promise... and then failed with the CU.

No MMO has held my love and attention quite like the original EQ. I look forward to the day where another challenging MMO comes along and make death painful and leveling up a real accomplishment. I want max level in a year, not a month.

Ragnarok Online - a really simple Korean game with essentially no quests. It was a 99 lvl grind. It had great stat customization and that's what addicted me. I played it back when it was in beta ( I hear it's advanced quite a bit since then).

Everquest was my first. I didn't think anything would replace it after trying MxO, SWG, and more. Then I played WoW and have been with it ever since. Hopefully something can replace it soon...

Ultima Online

I had more fun exploring the world in UO than any other game. I had a boat and sailed around, runes to every city and point of interest, I even explored the secret tunnels beneath Buc Den. I also spent hours on end hanging out with in-game friends outside the mage guild in the main city.

ZOMG, I was always a humongous fan of RPGs - from paper D&D to Final Fantasy and everything else in between, but I've ALWAYS stayed away from MMOs...Then I got into RTS, and it was Starcraft this, and Warcraft that. So when Blizzard came out with an MMO, I had to try.... and I never looked back. So that's my story!
