To date, the devs have said the right things of this. If CoH/V became free due to advertising, it would actually make the worse case scenario - of advertisers dictacting content - more likely since CoH/V wouldn't have sub fees to fall back on.

I'm interested to see how this pans out for CoH/V. They need to revitalise the game prior to Champions Online launching and this particularly revenue stream appears to be well thought out. We'll see how it goes in practise, but for now I'm happy to opt-in.
