As I would agree that each of these MMO's do a better job in some aspects than WoW does there is one thing that you forget. WoW has all of these elements in one package.

EQ is still the best MMO. There are others worth playing. AO. CoH. WoW was in beta. Nothing has still topped EQ though. Not even close really. It is amazing that the only thing that had really come before it was UO, which was total trash. I fear for EQ's future, but its present is still pretty damn good.

Scars of Velious was the Third EQ1 Expansion, not Planes of Power.

EQ is for me still the best MMO out there. I've played quite a few of them, all of them in this list except for DOMO and then some. EQ had something that the newer games didn't...a true reason to group up. Other games make it easy for the casual player to solo, in WoW you don't even need to talk to another person until you hit level 70. Grouping is actually slower EXP for 99% of the time than soloing is. I don't play MMO's because I'm interested in an RPG, there are single player RPG's that do a much better job of it than any MMO out there. I play MMO's because I want interaction, I want to group, I want to meet new people, have a laugh, and take down mobs even lower level ones...that I can't do by myself. WoW may be the most popular MMO out there because it appeals to a larger base of customers, but for me the best was and still is EQ.

If these were all better than WoW, then they would all have 10mil accounts.

but how many of those 10 million accounts are active and actually play? im sure a majority in there is there to make money off raiders who desperately need gold for their repairs and buying expensive mats for their enchants, leveling news skills and getting exalted in diff cities. so sure WoW maybe number one in farming and money consuming

preacherman23: I think the author is well aware of that. The point of the article was to point out that there are game that do each seperate thing better. As if to say if you are only concerned with PVP go try game X.

mietha CAG: Correction, you think EQ is still the best. I think if you asked all the MMO players out there today 99.9% of them would say EQ sucks.

Dan: In my 2 1/2 years playing WoW I think I soloed for about

I have not played DOMO, and you have peaked my interest. I would have to agree with all of your other choices. If you want deep compelling lore and well written quests, LoTRO is the way to go. Want a deep raiding end game to which the gainfully employed need not apply? EQ will scratch that itch.

In any case there are a few I would add:

Want really deep and meaningful character customization? CoH has pretty much every other MMO beat.

Want a ton of deep mechanics to fool around with? EQ II is a pretty good choice. Tons of classes, very deep crafting system, guild leveling mechanics that are unique among MMOs (as far as I know).

Want "freedom!" and don't much care about directed gameplay? Unltima Online is actually still a great choice. Be a farmer or a fighter, a craftsman or a crook. It's all up to you. Build your house just about any place you see fit. Head to the open PvP areas and discover the meaning of pain (or teach it to others).

In any case, enjoyable read.

hmmm my post got cut in half. Let me pick up where it left off..

Dan: In my 2 1/2 years playing WoW I think I soloed for less than 10 % of it. It really isn't hard to find a group in WoW.

Chris: There are lots of reasons why a good or even superior game wouldn't have 10 million subscribers. Marketing muscle being one of them.

EQ's all there is for me. And one thing there is in EQ that most people miss is the fact that there is a TON of lore, and probably 99% of players won't see it. I may play Darkfall Online when it comes out, but we'll see.

As for WoW have 10 million accounts...EQ probably has 5 times the accounts it boasts, but it only boasts about active accounts. I'm sure my WoW accounts that have been inactive since a few months after it went live are counted in that. And also one reason (the main reason) WoW has so many is the advertisement! I see it all over the internet, and even T.V. adds! I've never seen a game get so much advertisement, and I think it paid off.

Puf: 99.9% of gamers would say EQ sucks, but they still keep coming back! Can't be THAT bad!

Grindal: They had it right, reread the EQ part, it mentioned the fifth expansion before it started talking about it.

The thing about WoW is that it does ALL of these things better then most. I agree that each of these games are better in a specific way, but WoW does all of it nearly as well.

Agreed -- very good read. I especially enjoyed getting overviews about EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot. I didn't show up on the MMO scene until Final Fantasy XI, so I have to shrug unknowingly when people shower those games with endless praises.

I'd like to toss Pirates of the Burning Sea in there if you're looking for wonderfully-crafted 'vehicular' combat. It's just bloody brilliant -- and not to mention beautiful. I poop all over its avatar combat, though. I poop on it enough to never go back to that game.

I'd like to add one to Yeebo's comment about "freedom". Anyone looking for a more free form MMO where you can go and do as you please, build a house, have a farm, kill animals for hides and food, kill other players, build a city or a highway through a forest should give Wurm Online a go.

I would also throw Roma Victor in here but...

I play EVE now, I used to play WoW but blizz just made the game so easy it wasn't fun any longer. WoW is the gateway drug of MMOs, EVE is harder and in my opinion has the best political, skill, pvp, and community aspects of any game. DAOC pvp is pretty damn good, but I believe EVE edges it out just by aspect of sheer scope. Fekking Goon lag can really suck all the fun out of life though.

I think WAR will surpass even EVE pvp however and alot of my corp in EVE are planning on playing WAR as well as EVE when it releases.

Just so everyone is clear, the 10 million number DOES NOT include inactive or trial accounts, that number does not take into affect that some people have 1-3 accounts...so even if everyone has 3 accounts(which they dont...) their numbers would be 3.3 million, i think thats still 1-2 million over any other... so i would guess total subscribers to be around 7-8mil with 10.5 million accounts. Very few people have multiple accounts

I may be alone in this but i honestly think that FFXI is the best MMO, because there is no other MMO i've played (save darkages , not daoc... darkages by nexon) that has the same sense of achievement as that game. WoW was just too easy...

numbers don't make a game good... Need for speed sells millions..but is it a great racing game compared to its competitors(save the first few int he series)?.. ~_~

I really love this game and it's free; so you don't have to pay around $30 a month to keep playing. The reson it's not as large of WoW is im my opinion because it's not as well known. There are HEAPS of quests to do and many more classes than on WoW. Another upside is you can fly after lvl 15, not 68 or 70.

Its a great article. I didn't find that it was knocking WoW, just showing how some other games got some elements right.

Domo is a great casual game. Its fun, the ability to mix and match classes and skills is one of its best features. If you haven't, give it a try.

Well I think what you put in the article is true because some people might believe WoW is better but their not looking at all of the angles. Like WoW has awesome graphics and things like that but really its just a better version of the average rpgs. But I would say that domo is pretty awesome because it does things in their game like none before, like people who like to stay afk can and they can harvest while their sleeping. And for all those people who have internet girlfriends/boyfriends should play domo cuz theres big things on relationships whether it be teacher lover or friend when you get these dream stones you can improve your relations ships and if you party with them whether it be teacher lover or friend you get a speical skill you can use ever so often. But their are great things in the game DOMO and yesturday they added a new class called fencer. The only reason I didn't talk about EQ and the others that you mentioned is because I never played them before. But anyways I agree with you Brenda and you did a good job with showing all the angles.

WoW is a great game, it has a great system, wondeful community and never isnt new content to discover! Most of these "top 5" are based on alot of WoW's stuff. WoW ftw
