NPC realism is something I've always looked for in MMOs and is something that even single player RPGs are barely grasping.

The simplest solution is to have NPCs with shifts. at 11:50 one NPC walks from his home to the bank, high fives the banker and tells him to scoot because its now the new guy's turn. People might be out a banker all of 5 seconds and it adds a ton of realism to such a static NPC.

"imagine Orgrimmar with a 'realistic' downtown area that your character refused to enter after dark?"

You seriously think that would be a bad idea?

Can you imagine, this fine Friday at 1:30AM, the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 MMORPG as realistic? I'd vomit. And see the military-grade gloppy brown foodstuff! Seriously though, realism in a game is like smellovision. I hope that I need no explanation here. I don't know what people mean by real. I know there's quite a difference between realism, detail, believability, and playability.

Should I be expected to take a piss after I fill up on ale? No. Should I be allowed to take a piss after filling up on ale? YES. So you can see it lost realism. The piss should be a stream of yellow pixels, just for lack of detail. I can believe that I'd be able to piss after drinking. And it would make the game that much more fun. That's what I mean by realism, detail, believability, and playability.
