I know what some of you are thinking: gold for game time? That's just nuts. I'd probably have thought so myself, save that EVE Online does something like this with players buying time codes to trade for in-game ISK. That way the player who has extra in-game cash laying around can get some "free" gametime, and those who would normally buy game currency are able to do so in a fashion that appears to be more socially acceptable. The potential ramifications for the unethical/unapproved RMT dealers could be huge. Why buy gold from them when you can buy it from another player with the game company's blessing, and know for absolute sure that you'll actually get the in-game cash.
With all that said, what do you think? Do you think that a game like World of Warcraft could benefit from the in-game cash for time-codes system that CCP has in place for EVE? If you could get playtime for cashing out game currency, would you do it? If companies offered the chance for players get in-game currency for a time-code they purchase to trade to another player, do you think it might stop those who normally would just buy from a gold farmer?

I think is probably a good idea to kill of gold farmers who can be a royal pain in the rump in game. Any in-game solution to stops these guys is a clever move.

I think CCP has the right idea because they don't have the numbers that WoW does. It promotes a sense of "we care about our game and players". And it is a business model that works for Eve Online. I don't think new players like myself knew about this until I read this!
For wow it could work but on the other hand will it spread like a virus and take away profits? I think a hook in mouth could be an outrageous amount of gold that they allow every 3-6 months as a promotional event. And then promote it as "kill the gold farmers". I like how SWG took care of the gold farmer spammer by allowing player wardens. I think one solution to this is to allow players to hunt down gold spammers and set up a reward system in any game. It would be fun!

I think this is an excellent solution for multiple problems. This will reduce the number of people who goto gold sellers as well as probably bring down the gold-to-cash exchange rate. This also allows players who may otherwise quit playing a game, to continue by using their in-game money, the MMO company still gets their monthly fee for that person, just now someone else is paying it. I can't honestly think of a valid downside to any MMO doing this.

superb idea, because it does not upset the economy, it is only existist money changing hands, not hundreds of farmers sucking the life out of everything

I actually like this because of the way ccp has set it up to be secure and it cuts down farmers there is a few drawbacks i do see for wow. When you go to your local game store they would not have any game time cards in stock of course they could cure this by setting it up to sell time card codes online and only those could be used to trade for gold. next it would make people mad but less gold sellers would make people happy . The biggest win for this would be blizzard more time cards sold equal more money in there pocket imo it would be stupid for them not to set this up, time cards make them money farmers lose them money.

They actually do sell time-codes online from what I saw; it's just third-party companies that CCP lists on their own site as opposed to CCP selling them directly.
Still, kind of makes you wonder why CCP doesn't just sell them directly.

The way i took it is that they ship you a time card if you buy one from ccp store. If you buy from another site they may send you just the code to your email but there just scratching off the card and sending you the code to avoid shipping costs and overseas shipping. What i was trying to say is that blizzard could remove the card when buying online and just send the code to your email this could prevent the problem of people buying every card in every store and auctioning them off on ebay while people that would need them could not get them of themselves. by doing online only blizzard could cut down on costs of producing and shipping the time cards that would be bought in mass if they did this and have a unlimited supply of codes at any time.
