I agree with you almost 100%. I did once get into a guild where I was comfortable enough with the people in it that I started doing voice chat, and actually enjoyed myself quite a bit. But that was once across many years of MMO gaming.

I just don't want to find out that the person I'm playing with is in reality a 16 year old with turrets spewing curses every few seconds. Or a mom who constantly is chasing her kids out of the room when they're looking for some attention from her (ever watch The Guild?).

Great write-up. I'd go even further..

"There are times of course, when voice chat is a requirement. No-one sane would think of raiding nowadays without using voice chat to organise things."

.. to say there is no need at all for voice chat... AT ALL. I find it more of a distraction to both the raid and the game experience as a whole. Save vent /TS for the counterstrike sessions.

I'd just like to toss in that voice chat adds to the immersion of some alternative MMOs like PlanetSide, where you're all soldiers shoulder-to-shoulder, and should be able to shout for support at an instant. Typing in the midst of realtime combat is a real hassle.

The only time I use voice chat in other MMOs is when I'm playing with my real life friends, and no immersion barrier prevents me from having a good time with them (almost a dozen of RL friends play CoH with me, we all got into it together).

This seems more about RP and making sure the "experience" isn't ruined by voice chat. If someone doesn't want to talk thats understandable, but if you are doing high rated arena/high end raiding without any voice chat then you're just gimping your team/raid.

Not everyone plays this game to be "immersed", some of us do enjoy meeting and getting to know the people as they are outside the game, not the pixels they control in the game. Just my opinion though.

"Misrepresentation is common in MMOs.."

Thank god we have voice chat then, I don't like being lied to.
