The WarCry Network is reporting this morning that Cryptic Studios (the original development company that created City of Heroes) has launched a new website and associated forums for their recently announced Champions Online superhero MMO. Additionally, Hero Games (creators of the tabletop RPG which the MMO is based on), will release a new (6th) edition to coincide with Champions Online.
Scanning through the website and screen shots (see the one above) - I'm loving the cell shaded look! Being a big time CoX fan myself -- I can't wait to give Champions a spin! Check out the site and then let us know if you think there's room for another superhero MMO. Do you like what you see (real time fighting!!)? Do you think they'll make their Spring '09 launch date? Let the speculation begin!

I wish them well. The genre seems unbelievably neglected. Yes, there is CoX, but name another super hero themed game that wasn't tied to a movie release.
A lot of us gamers probably grew up on a healthy diet of comics, PnP RPG's, and PC gaming/consoling. RPG's and gaming have done well but for a lot of us comics got left back there someplace. I might not want to go back to comics per se but the narratives are still appealing and a well done super hero game that isn't tied to the corporate abortion that is NCsoft sounds pretty cool.
My smack on NCsoft? I play Lineage2. You want to hear a story about a game that could have swiped most PVP'ers away from WoW, but it just never got it's act together? Ask an L2 player...

I'm currently 27 yrs old and reading the chronological x-men compilation floating out on the internet.. every x-man related comic since the 60's in 18 2GB packages... So yeah, I love me some comics ;)
But you're totally right, there's a huge lack of super hero games considering how many people are familiar with the stories let alone the fact that they practically design themselves.

Wow, did anybody read through the feature list? It's like they're calling out CoX to a showdown.
"Do you want purple force fields? Green fire blasts? Jet black claws? In Champions Online, you decide!"
Every CoX follower knows that non-customizable powers have been a point of tension between the devs and the players. So Champions just called them out.
Well, I'd be lying if it didn't entice me. CoX is still lacking a lot of feature and polish, as much as it pains me to admit. This game will either do better, or cause CoX to shape up to stay competitive.
Either way, I win.

In response to Lemmo,
I thought the same thing! Maybe this is a clever ploy to get CoX to get their act together~

I loved CoX, but the environment was boring. Great characters, dull world.
If they were to only take the current CoX gameplay and put it in an exciting world as diverse as one like WoW, then I would totally play.
I also wish that MMO developers would kill leveling once and for all. I firmly believe that there can be advancement without levels - the goal making the entire world created a place where everyone fights. No newbie zones basically... everywhere you go you can find danger.
Still... I am excited and hopeful about Champions online. I hope they incorporate the weakness thing. In the table top game you could take on weaknesses that would give you more points to spend on your powers. Like one might be a focus object where your powers come from (say your magic cape) and if it got knocked off you somehow, then you lost your powers. But with that risk you could get extra points to spend on powers. Basically, it is a choose-your-kriptonite format.

Are we forgetting that CoX was created by this same studio and was the brain child if the same person AND that CoX has not been in the direct hands of NCSoft long enough to be different from Jacks primary influence AND AND that CoX was the first of its kind in genre and system design AND AND AND NCSoft will probably be the platform publisher for CO as well?
Sounds like CO is more of Jack saying “hey! I want a do-over!”. Not that it wont be better than CoX is and probably will damage it...
I was in CoX beta from the start and walked away from it conclusively about 9 months ago. I was a fan for a long time... BUT i will check CO out to see if Jack can evolve in directing content development. It could be a tweaked clone, it may be a step forward. Only time will tell.
