Guess the Turbine folks havn't heard about the lawsuit the Tolkien Estate has brought against New Line Cinema for lack of payment.

Part of that lawsuit is seeking to revoke the rights New Line has for the two Hobbit movies.

The suit could also potentially have direct effects on LOTRO. If Tolkein Enterprises is taking the view that they don't owe the estate money for the films, they're probably taking the same view for the game. I believe the estate asked for a restraining order against the Hobbit films, so it isn't entirely far-fetched to imagine them coming after the game as well. Today's agreement is only worth the paper/bandwidth it's printed on if Tolkein Enterprises still has the rights when the dust settles....

LotRO is based on the books, not the movies, so any deal involving the movies falling through doesn't affect LotRO. Turbine has the rights to The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but not the Silmarillion or any other extra stuff. LotRO has nothing to do with New Line's not paying the Tolkien Estate what they owed.
