For this type of play, the monthly fee is lame. There is no persistent world to maintain, just ladder stats. If they needed funds to support that, then they should consider advertising.
There is no way I would go out and buy multiple toy purchases only to pay $5+ more a month to use them when I can purchase Unreal, Quake, Halo, etc... and play for free.
I love MMOs, and I never mind paying a fee for the upkeep and growth of a virtual environment, but not for a 1 on 1 arena style battle.
