Back in EQ1 I had one character that was female. She got free stuff all the time. People would run by and offer to help break camps, kill mobs, anything. My male chars never got the same treatment. I havent played any female characters since then, so I don't know what it's like in newer games, but it was definitely the case back then, in my experience.

It hasn't happened to me since the original EQ, either. But creating a pretty female character there guaranteed much tweaking from strangers. I made a Dark Elf Shadowknight and barely made it out into the newbie area before having someone force gear on me. I would even say that she was an alt and it wouldn't matter. I also had an in-game friend who gave up his main to start playing females just for all the free stuff.

Its not always about blatant free stuff, but women are given preferential treatment in certain cases just like men are given preferential treatment in other cases.

rare recipes mostly given to female guildies if all else is equal
rare hardcore raiding items usually are given to men first due to stereotypes of raiding prowess and available times.

etc.
So for casuals its better to play as female characters if your main goal is to get casual oriented loot faster. But then you'd have to roleplay it too which gets creepy.

Personally, I play female characters because I like to look at myself dressed up in skimpy chainmail.

In WoW, people always try and help me out on my female Draenei alt... but quite curiously, not on the female dwarf. Hmm.

My husband plays female charcters all the time but not for the free stuff....it's because if you are at a computer staring at the rear end of a charcter for 8 hours a day...it should be one that is appealing to your gender. Does anyone else feel that way?

My choice of female avatars isn't what one would consider traditionally beautiful in most MMOs, unless the designer didn't bother to offer fugly as an option.

So yeah, it's happened quite a bit.
