I'd imagine it being somewhat similar to Tabula Rasa, only with three sides involved. As for character progression, it'd be easy to run with three "classes" per race, with upgradable gear to differentiate between roles for the Protoss and Terrans, and mutations for the Zerg.

Didn't they say along time ago that Diablo 3 would definately be a MMO? So couldn't the next-gen mmo blizzard keeps talking about just be Diablo 3?

Diablo 3 is Hellgate:London... Most of the Diablo crew left to work on that game. While as cool as MMO Diablo would be I have a feeling their next gen will be Starcraft or a new IP.

I think that the conversion of Starcraft into an MMO would follow the pattern that was set forth by WoW. Many of the classes of WoW were not units. Some were but many not.

My big question would be what would an MMO that relies mostly on ranged attacks would look like. Most units in Starcraft had a ranged attack.

I always imagined it might be more like EVE online. Perhaps instead of classes, characters could enlist in one of several branches; infantry, cavalry, (astro)navy... which would give them access to the various machinery and skills associated with those units.

i can very easily see them doing what they did to WC to SC. Make certain classes for space combat. very similar to SWG ( one the best MMO's b4 soe destroyed it) make a combat class similar to the zealot, and allow people to use different weapons based on what skills they wanted to use. zealot (tank) marine (ranged dps) Medic (heal bot) but then again that limits the game quite a bit. but you also see the class wyvern rider, or calvary availible in WOW. So the units may not even determine the classes, i might end up alot more like Tabula Rasa or SWG where there was no real tanking class, just different armor sets and healers. will be interesting to see if that is the MMO proposed by blizzard, i mean Activision Blizzard

It wouldn't make much sense to make a Starcraft MMO, they would be competing against themselves with SC2 already coming out.

They already have a domain for what is currently called Diablo 3. My guess is they are creating an MMO for Diablo or starting something totally new.

I think Starcraft would highly engender a following but making the game is much easier said then done. As you point out traditional MMO facets don't blend that easily into the Scifi realm. Especially when the focus in Starcraft is more on ranged and constructed units.

This means you have to take the Planetside approach. I think its doable if you add in loot and upgrades. Dungeons and real objectives. But again you still have to make Planetside. And thats not gonna sit terribly well in the long run. Especially considering they haven't pumped out an FPS yet. Once you move to ranged weaponry as a primary then the present MMORPG combat style goes out the window.

The fact they they are making SC2 in and of itself tells us the next MMO from them is gonna either be a new title or be based on the Diablo universe. I think blizzard is too lazy to go for a new property yet so Diablo is where I am and have been putting my money.

I think looking at a Starcraft MMO as being "World of Warcraft" with a thick coat of Starcraft paint would be a mistake. While Warcraft started as an RTS title, Warcraft 3 put more emphasis on Roleplaying, exploration, and heros, whereas Starcraft now holds the crown of RTS King.

If you're going to make a Starcraft MMO, make it an MMORTS: Players are not actually on the field of battle themselves, but control their characters like a traditional RTS. As you level, you gain more 'resource points' to build your own army with; do you spend your points on 20 1-point marines, or 4 5-point siege tanks? A combination of marines, firebats, and medics?

Bump up the unit customization by giving each type it's own means for growth and development; because you manage a smaller group of soldiers, you can spend more time developing them, giving them names, promoting them for performance, giving them new skills...

The real treat is when you and 10 of your friends 'raid' together, with your combined forces creating, quite literally, an army.

That was sort of the idea I had. You have your small force of elite soldiers and this can be a mix of different skills and classes. The only downside to this that I can see is how to do it without making it extremely multitask intensive.

I imagine that, ofcourse the terran wouldnt be just running out killing things to lvl up, but in a sort of sense be like TR where you are sent on missions... for terran maybe you could get sent on scouting/ small infestation removing mission depending on class and other things

It is all going to depend on SC2. If they follow the Warcraft pattern. They should expand the universe with SC2 like they did with WCIII and continue the story with Universe of Starcraft(USC)

I would think that USC would not come out until a couple years after SC2. You would think in 3-4 years WoW would be on a down turn and USC would be a good replacement so they would not be stealing their own customers.

They may try something crazy and do a rts MMO, who knows but I am looking forward to anything they are going to do.

Starcraft MMO would suffer from the same fate as starwars galaxies. You can't apply the medival RPG to every game. It doesn't work. The developers need to get out of the mentality of trying to adopt space based shooters to melee combat RPG's. But if anyone is up to the challenge it's blizzard.
