38 Studios is making promising moves, but I'm not yet convinced that they're a slam-dunk to build the next great MMO. I am of the opinion that company culture and creative experience are the critical factors in building a winning property. It isn't something you can just throw money at.

No, I wouldn't say that 38 Studios effort will be a slam-dunk by any means, but it is a promising start.

The 38 Studios property seems to be fleshing out to something far more than an MMORPG. The MMORPG is an element of the total project. they are apparently branching into other entertainment realms. The total package will be something that amounts to a single order of magnitude above what typically is out there...

Anticipation isn’t killing me but there is interest in seeing what the whole project is about.

Convergence is all well and good, but you need to produce a hit that you can capitalize on first.. All convergence and synergy flows from the initial blockbuster hit.

What I like about 38 Studios is that the studio is owned and operated by a HUGE fan of MMORPGs, Curt Schilling (that sound so bizarre!). He has recruited some great talent. If 38 Studios can come up with some original ideas, they may just put out a great product. The funding and talent is there, that's for sure.
