One thing that is totally missing from WoW is a monsters' fear of high level players. Getting attacked by a grey monster as you wander around is annoying and silly considering it should be running for its life, not asking to be 1-shot.

The presence attack in the Hero System was one of the best features of that game. A well timed speech or act of strength could end an encounter before it even started. Even if the bad guys decided to fight, it would at least make them pause so you would get the first attack. It never worked against major villians but against henchmen and joe bob criminal it was great.

I never understood why a mob that was so much lower then the player characters would attack. That is probably asking for too much reality from MMO's. But it would be nice to see not only does a low level mob not attack a higher level player, it runs away and doesn't cause aggro.

Love the article and agree with Ghen. Aggro should work both ways with mobs - not only should they be aggressive when you are lower level, but they should be wary when you are quite a bit higher then they are. Certainly this wouldn't apply to all mob archetypes, but it would be interesting to see grays shying away from or cowering in the presence of high level players. Some very basic pyschological routines written into mob AI would go a long way to making things a bit more fun.

Props for managing to work in both a Princess Bride AND a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference tho.

Seriously!
