Non-mmo gameplay in an MMO game is not a new idea. However, it is a GOOD idea, and deserves to be shouted from the rooftops now and again.

I'm not sure that Viva Pinata is such a great source game to draw on though, since it was ultimately boring as hell, but it does contain many good ideas and concepts that would translate well to an MMO format. The "living ecology" idea and other procedural content based gameplay models are all very fun and add immeasurably to otherwise mind-numbing wash-rinse-repeat MMO dungeon-crawling concepts.

The problem with procedural content and living ecologies is that they lead inevitably to complexity, which leads to bugs and exploitation opportunities. So there is obviously a downside. but I say it's TOTALLY WORTH IT.

There are so many untapped gameplay models that can be opened up by adding mildly-multiplayer elements based on procedural content, everything from "The Sims"-like social roleplaying to mini wargames.
