It's the content, stupid.

I don't know why people are so convinced that Conan and Warhammer's respective licenses guarantee success. This year saw the release of the One License to Rule Them All. More people read Lord of the Rings, watched the movies, etc, than have read/watched/played Conan, Warhammer, and World of Warcraft combined.

If you want to beat WoW's numbers, you need to have a game of similar quality to WoW. Turbine managed this with LOTRO. However, you ALSO need a comparable amount of content to WoW. LOTRO managed this ... for 30 of its 50 levels. (Don't take my word for it, their most recent dev diary is about how they need to gut and completely overhaul the game's main level 40+ zone, a criticism that closed beta testers knew about over nine months ago.)

Unfortunately, content costs money (either in delays or hiring more devs), and it's very hard to assemble anywhere near the cash Blizzard has at its disposal (they employ 80 people in their CINEMATICS dept, for the 3 minute trailer you watch once when you install the game).

I often want to smack my head against the wall at the stupidity of "Analysts" who draw completely idiotic conclusions based on massively incomplete data about something they know absolutely nothing about.

The reason WoW's subscriber numbers haven't suffered despite the rise of new MMO's is that the amount of people signing on to the new MMO's is miniscule compared to the total subscriber base of WoW. In other words, the new MMO's are picking up the fallout from people _leaving_ WoW, even while WoW's publicity and advertising efforts are adding completely new people to their game.

So WoW is actually adding many many new players to their game, but losing almost as many old, jaded players from their game too, people that are going to new games in search of something different or more fulfilling than WoW.

Yeah umm where are these "analyst" reports he is referring to... I can't remember anything where people swore TR/LOTRO etc... was going to steal the thunder from WoW.
