To be fair, fantasy MMOs aren't always about pure fantasy. World of Warcraft is primarily fantasy, but it's also steampunk in a few respects, mostly with the Gnome and Goblin technologies, such as a tram connecting 2 towns, the Gnome mount being a mechanical biped, and the Goblins frequently fighting from the controls of a bipedal shredder or the quadrupedal spider tanks. Hell, the Naaru and their crystalline-based "interdimensional ships" scream heavily of the science-fiction genre.

Lord of the Rings(and consequently Lord of the Rings Online) plays it straight, but it seems it's harder to stay straight fantasy as time goes on.

As kids, our imagination is fueled with fairy tales.
Fantasy is the logical evolution of your 'Imaginary World' as we grow adult no ?.

Sci-Fi is something you have to learn ( to read ) by yourself.
So the lack of shared references can explain the smaller number of people interested in this kind of 'Imaginary world'.

Even is bridge are known and famous between Sci-Fi and Fantasy ( Star Wars etc ... )
