Sure, age verification may be invasive of your privacy... but at least it's totally ineffective at preventing minors from coming into contact with adult content!

Someone remind me what age verification was supposed to accomplish, again?

It was supposed to add a veneer of accountability to SL's openness in the face of age-related hoo-haas in the past year.

afaik, it's only a veneer at this rate.

One worry is that average users who do not read the blogs or keep up to date are going to assume that the "Verified" tag means that the person has been vetted and is who they claim to be.

Nothing could be further from the truth. This causes people to put their guard down when it comes to minors. The resident is verified and there for must be obove 18. No need to file a report they are just childish. This puts minors at far greater risk.

Recently there was an enterprising minor who created a Bank in SL. I am sure that he would have found a way to Verify him self to make people take him more seriously. If the concept of declaring your age, sex and location were added. I am sure he would have set him self up as a 50+ year old so that people saw that he had experience.

This is dangerous. This is wrong and this puts him and his customers at risk.

There is no way to verify age reliably. If someone who is under 18 really wants to get on the main grid, they will.
Age verification is about protecting Linden Labs from lawsuits. Period.

The big questions is how can something this bad give any protections form lawsuits. Not that I really can understand how someone can sue someone else for failing there own responsibility. If anything LL should sue the parents that let there minors access the grid.

/ Nadine, for a country almost with out lawsuits

So basically it works like a normal parcel ban. If you don't know, parcel bans only work up to 50m, specifically to not impede flight. Honestly that's kind of stupid... parcel bans should work irregardless of Z. And some sim owners prohibit allow lists anyway - some of them even prohibit ban lines entirely!

Integrity offers indemnification as a part of the service. So this seems a bit like insurance for LL.
