Slight fix to your details... the open beta for the closed beta folks and fileplanet founders started on Dec. 3 (I'm sure I haven't imagined the last 8 days of playing). The open beta for anyone at all should have started on Dec. 7.

Well, I don't doubt you've been playing if you say you have, but...

from http://www.burningsea.com/page/news/article&article_id=10483

"Open Beta is scheduled to begin worldwide on Friday, December 7th, 2007, at which point FilePlanet subscribers can get in. After that it’ll be open for everyone within a week."

and then, posted on the 7th of December at their homepage
http://www.burningsea.com/page/news/article&article_id=10490

"We are pleased to announce that all FilePlanet subscribers now have access to the Pirates of the Burning Sea open beta!"

Since then, no more news as to everyone else being invited, and the link to the Fileplanet open beta access still asks for a paid subscription account with them. You weren't still playing the Closed beta before by chance?

No, the switch between betas was quite noticeable, what with the character wipe and all. :)

They didn't announce the open beta until the 7th because they didn't want people to get confused about the whole paid/unpaid fileplanet thing (that was the explanation they gave on the closed beta forums).

Anyway, I've seen several posts on the forums saying that although the fileplanet download pages say loudly that you need to pay, you *can* still download it for free, it's just difficult to find because they want you to pay.

In fact, I just clicked through the fileplanet link. It says that you need an *account* to download the file. But there's a quiet link on the left to register for a free account.

Hmm, I will happily make an update to the post showing how people can get in if you point me to that link you mentioned. But I tried going to the Fileplanet link and it says it's for Subscribers and Founder's Club members only, offers three paid subscription plans, and there is a box to do an unpaid register in the top right but with the disclaimer that you won't be joining the beta.

http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/potbs/ which leads to http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/potbs/sub3.aspx is where I'm looking. Is there another link?

I wonder if that has something to do with the fact that the page they link to has "stress test" in the page title.

Okay, poking around, it looks like they really did change the timing of things to make things later than they'd originally announced to the closed beta folks. Weird.

Anyway, if I go to this page:
http://www.burningsea.com/page/news/article&article_id=10483
it has a "please visit this link for download information" link that leads to the page I mentioned which has the free account link on the left. Since I have a (free, not paying) account, I just logged in, searched for "pirates of the burning sea," and it took me to this page:

http://www.fileplanet.com/96291/0/section/Pirates-of-the-Burning-Sea

From there I *am* able to click through to the free-to-download servers.

So, I don't know if it's just that they changed the timing and the four days are up or what, but it *is* possible to download for free now, it appears.

Ahh yes, that's for downloading the client, but I believe people will still need to find themselves a beta key elsewhere. I have made an update though, as people like yourself with closed beta access and those in the Founders club were in from December 3rd as you say. I also found where people can get their keys now, so enjoy!

Well sorry for the initial confusion... I have no idea why they switched the dates around after initially telling folks on the forums that it would be the third and the seventh. And the fact that the open beta servers actually did go live on the third kind of left me with the impression that they'd stuck to those dates. :)
