In the past, Star Trek Online devlogs have been light on gameplay information. Perpetual's Mike Stemmle usually writes about the development team, concept art, and things of that nature. But this time it's different. Not only does Devlog #5 include juicy details about interacting with NPCs, but it also includes the very first in-game screenshot. Sweet!
We can learn a couple of things from this screenshot. First of all, the graphics are neither cutting edge nor outdated; they're right in the middle. This is arguably a sweet spot for MMOs. Second, the LCARS influence can be seen on the UI, but it's not overt. In fact, it's barely there. We do find it a bit alarming that the game features a standard MMO "1 through =" action bar -- a tired convention that's begging for innovation.
As far as the NPC interaction stuff goes, though, it all sounds good.

No, I am glad to see that it's still alive. However, based on this screenshot, the interface sucks, and I won't go anywhere near this game.
I have always been a trekie since I was a kid, and I have been very much looking forward to this release, but this gives me a queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I'm sure it will get polished and refined before release. I'm also sure most MMOs had a first screen shot that looked pretty different from the final release. There's obviously a lot of detail missing; stats, maps, etc.

Ha! 1st screenshot of the game, still really early in development, and someone's already complaining about something... I love our fickleness.
Honestly, that looks a lot less horrid than what I expecting, after having been in the GnH beta. It looks quite good graphically, actually.

Wow!
I'm impressed! I wasn't quite sure what I was expecting frm the first screenshot of STO (bout damn time btw!) but this is definitely heads and tales above what Iw as expecting. The graphics look clean, and the ship looks very nice.
The game looks like it may shape up to be a bit like EVE, although lets hope it won't be as complicated (some of us don't actually like that aspect of EVE).
The UI looks a bit shoddy right now but with the game in such an early stage I am not all to surprised. It will be cleaned up and revamped a multitude of times before finally being finalized.
Nice job Perpetual!
