I guess they do not want EQ2 extensions to become invisible walls in the progression of the new subscribers.
Just like it was the case with Velious/Luclin in EQ at the beginning.
Which means new players HAVE to own difficult expansions before going further with forthcoming extensions.


In the old days of EQ, Kunark was quickly owned by the hardcore guilds, but Veeshan's Peak remained a challenge for everyone quiet for quiet some time.
Guess we are heading towards the same situation.

WoW guilds beat Illidan, the current toughest raid boss in the game, within about a week of the zone's launch. There hasn't been new high end raid content for six months since (the new raid in this month's patch is a mid-entry level 10-man). It's certainly possible that WoW has lost some subscribers for it, but I don't think anyone will argue that WoW is about to collapse. As of today, my server hosts 3 guilds that have killed Illidan, four more that have done at least one boss in the Black Temple (his dungeon), a total of 25 that have killed a boss in the previous tier, and nearly 50 guilds that have finished at least Karazhan (the entry level 10-man raid - there may be as many more guilds that are working on it, but they don't get listed on our progression thread).

Point being, you can tune your content to keep the bleeding edge entertained, or you can resign yourself to top guilds burning through it and tune it so that the majority of your raiding playerbase will have a shot. The sheer amount of effort SOE has spent making EQ2 more like WoW should give you a hint which approach they think offers more revenue in the long run.
