I don't think a simple controller will ever give the high-bandwidth experience of a mouse and keyboard. A mouse or other high-fidelity pointing device is absolutely necessary at the minimum.

The Nintendo Wiimote might work, but still it would require some fabulous programming to be smooth and accurate enough to compete with the insane precision and quickness that the mouse offers. And even then you still need 30 or more keys or buttons to intuitively and instantly trigger the wide array of special powers and abilities that the average MMO character has, even disregarding basic movement control.

So consoles will need vastly expanded interface devices before MMO's become practical to play on them with the same gameplay depth that we enjoy today.

I suggested in a previous comment an exciting alternative where PC players and Console players could co-exist on an MMO though: See my comment in the topic:

Coherent - You're talking about one kind of MMO with specific control requirements. Not all MMOs are created equal.

Picture the Animal Crossing MMO. Mouse and keyboard required? Nope.

What is the "average" MMO character? The Club Penguin crew doesn't have a huge subset of keyboard-controlled commands. Neither do the Webkinz. And Neopets? Those things don't even *animate*.

I dont see a controller being a limitation. The current gen systems either allow a keyboard or some sort of an accessory with full out keys. The consoles also have an advantage where voice chat can be built right into the client eliminating the need for a keyboard.
The point and click interface is what people are used to but even with current mmos people are finding ways to play them on pc with a controller.

If you compare the price of a high end gaming rig to a ps3 or 360
it's insane. I play WoW on a general use iMac but as much as i enjoy games i could never imagine shelling out many more thousands of dollars for a computer that will be obsolete in a couple of years.

I think the reason WoW is so popular is it never tried to be bleeding edge and it can be ran at high resolution on something like an iMac. I think for graphic intensive games consoles give you so much more bang for your buck.

But Carmack, being the certified genius that he is, is right on the money, Computers will be relegated to niche games such as MMOs and RTSs
