Isolation and helplessness are the earmarks of good horror - neither of which really fit the bill in the most common MMO environments - by their very nature, the first M in MMO de-isolates users, unless some mechanism can be made to force the issue.

I'm envisioning something "28 Days Later"-esque - where the players are a band of survivors of a worldwide catastrophe, and are vastly outnumbered by an encroaching enemy, and *must* come together to survive (barring anything akin to "I am Legend" - where an isolated hero occasionally tries to hold sway against legions of enemies).

However, this model would be difficult for new MMO players to get into. It would almost certainly require a fundamentally different approach to characterization - rather than level-based, it would be skill-dependent, and development wouldn't make characters stronger in the most basic sense, but would instead make them more effective, better leaders, more skilled in more things, and so forth - you wouldn't have a super-armored tank to wade into a fight, you'd have a character which knows more about the strengths and weaknesses of their adversary, or how to exploit a weakness ("If you kill it with this kind of head shot, everyone can get a temporary health boost by eating the bone fragments that an experienced medical player grinds into immuno-serum").

Relying on such a highly-cooperative methodology is a substantial challenge, since there's so much variation in human nature and behavior, and people don't necessarily behave the same way in online environments as they would in real life (ie: Asshat Anonymity Assertion); which could be the death knell for something like this.

MMO environments are generally accepted to be loot and experience pinatas; shifting the paradigm to more basic fight for survival would be a heck of a trick, and if it can be pulled off, I'd be very interested in seeing it.

Note to developers: HIRE ME, I HAVE SPICY BRAINS. :-)

Great, great post. That said, you can still get phat loot by creating raidable instances of, say, military bases, laboratories, and ruined cities.

There're also a couple of free-to-play horror MMOs, I believe. Though they probably aren't very good...

Secret World is in development. World of Darkness is in development. A couple of other Horror MMOs are in development as well I believe.

I was thinking something more like a Friday the 13th plot where you get thrown into different instances with some random people and your goal is to survive the longest/escape the house. Sort of like Tron where you may work together for a common goal all the while looking out for #1.

Anyone remember Ghost Master? game was a scare-sim. Imagine one player making a dungeon for another player and putting a killer. One tries to get out the other tries to kill them. Either way, having a horror raid wouldn't fit in the model, it'd be more like multiplayer

What about an MMO based on the single-player game F.E.A.R.? If you haven't tried that, you need to. You will leap out of your seat in some of the situations. Truly terrifying and a good sci-fi/shooter aspect. That would be a winner.
