I need to disagree with you on the subject of athletics - you may not see the dramatic, one-time improvement all of a sudden, but you can achieve benchmarks (bench press two hundred pounds, run a five minute mile, high-jump six feet, make par, etc, etc...).

The first time you achieve a goal you set for yourself... yeah, it's like that.

When I heard Beethoven's Ninth Symphony for the first time, my skill in music appreciation went up a level.

I think its the Social aspect of a game that makes of breaks it.

Call it coincidence , call it luck . But the games that hooked me immediately were the mmo's that had a well thought communication layer added to the game.

Even the in chat buggered up game ac2 ( i can recall days without guild chat). Had what it took to be successful.

Cheers ,

Dre
