I have no artistic ability but I do rely on user created modifications to enhance my gameplay. From Elder Scrolls to WoW, user created content makes my experience that much more enjoyable.

As long as its free. I'm definitely not going to buy a sword with +2 demonslaying in a game.. Even if thats the only way I'm going to progress. I'd rather stop playing.

I've done both in SL, and a mixture works very well for me. But if we have to play either/or, I'll go with make. I can still be inspired by others; it's just that I'd have to figure out how to make it myself. (Indeed, many of the most inspiring things in SL aren't for sale.)

I am not sure I understand your question. It is world where you can create or world where you have to buy everything? But, world of creation gives me not only possibility to create but ALSO possibility to buy other resident's creations. And buying is a great way of communication. For many people it is not business but an opportunity to share and to connect.
So this question is not much of a problem.

Question is creation without commerce or exclusively commerce world. Now, that depends on personal preferences. I would stick to creations world. I like to build and I could at least roam around and see what other people build.

It's an issue of specialization, how much you value your time, opportunity costs ("If I work on this widget, I'll miss the Punk Monks' thrash chant show!" or more seriously, "...I'll have to give up a modeling/etc. gig"), and how much discretionary spending money you have. Specialization makes sense--people do what they do best, and everybody gets better stuff as a result.

That said, I'd say everyone should try building... including me; I'm perpetually ashamed of myself for having spent more than a year in SL without doing any scripting or anything more than rudimentary building.

As a professional content creator I often have folks show me the things they tinker together in SL. Usually it's followed by a self-effacing "but i'm not a good builder" to which I always say "the imagination counts much more than the prim work." Self creation and trade based economies are both great, but choosing one over the other diminishes both.

While the convenience of buying stuff "optimizes" your time in world, it also removes the care and attatchment that you might have to things. Your aunties self made hideous pink prim coffee table is probably much more precious to her than anything she could buy in world, and that's as it should be.

As NWN recently reported ( http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2007/11/undersexed-over.html ) most residents engage in some form of creation. This doesn't have to be everyone's main activity in world, but turning VR's into buying games like The Sims severely limits them.

This is the trend in most of the new virtual worlds - creating a larger gap between content creators and consumers. This even seems to be a large component of the more creative one's i've seen. As a content creator I get tired of creating, and I'm sure folks get tired of my creations. Leaving creation up to a seperate class of folk who spend all their time cranking out new widgets for the proletariat is a very dull prescriptive way to run a world. People need their prims too.
