It's one of those things about Second Life - because it's completely driven by user-created content and activities over a huge range of types we have news every day, sometimes too much of it - none of us could get to a big event to announce the results of the Coca-cola contest earlier today for example.
Although I don't play any MMORPGs at the moment in years gone by I played Lineage and Shadowbane in beta. My memory of those is that there's a huge burst of news with the release of an update and with the aftermath as the new balances are discovered, then things settle down.
In SL, we might have more consistent news every day, and we report it too!
