As the holiday season approaches and our favorite videogame genre bulges with new titles, it seems like many of them are intellectual properties (IP) that have been made massive: that is, an IP that somebody, somewhere thought would be cool (or profitable) to turn into an online experience. Past MMOGs based on well-known IPs have had mixed success. Star Wars Galaxies, for instance, converted arguably the world's best known IP into an MMOG but fizzled. The Matrix Online tried to take advantage of a pop-culture phenomenon but that didn't work out either. City of Heroes/Villains cashed in on our love of comic books – not an IP exactly, but close. Lord of the Rings Online has had some success, as well, but not overwhelmingly so. In the near future, Games Workshop's Warhammer IP will be making its MMO debut as Warhammer Online (developed by EA-Mythic), along with Age of Conan (Funcom's ambitious interpretation of Robert E. Howard's barbarous world). Even MMOGs based on other videogames could fit into this 'make-massive' trend: Blizzard Entertainment turned its own real-time strategy Warcraft franchise into an online world, as did Square-Enix with Final Fantasy.
That got me thinking: if I had the power to make an MMOG, what would it be? A series of books, or a movie? Personally, I think that Perpetual Entertainment's Star Trek Online has great potential, but that could be due to the fact that I always thought I would look really good in a red and black uniform commanding a starship. Maybe Harry Potter? Though who knows how that one would work. As Matt points out, fans don't always make the best game developers, and it's certainly true that converting a big, complex IP into an MMOG can have its pitfalls. But ideally, in your most secret heart of hearts, which world would you love to see be made massive? Where would your dream MMOG be set?

I am dying to see the finished form of the Firefly MMO that is supposed to be coming sometime.

I would love to see a Terminator MMO; the ability to design an avatar with Arnold's appearance is worth $15.00 a month!

A couple of thoughts:
First one would be Marathon Online. Second one that would be cool would be Deus Ex Online.
Then again I have written a cyberpunk trilogy that would work as both a game/MMORPG as well.

Firefly? Are you kidding? That would be AWESOME! /goes and does a google search on firefly mmo!
I always thought a really well done mobster MMO would be really cool. Players could either be the police or mob. Bribes going back and forth. If a gang is too active, police can get warrants, conduct surveillance... etc... etc... If properly done, it could be very cool.

I'd personally like to see something based on either the Neuromancer world, or Snow Crash's virtual world.
Something involving hacking and cyberpunk stuff, not just future tech and biotech and increasing amounts of glowy things on weapons. (not that it's bad...)

Elder Scrolls MMO anyone? With the same free-form of course..Pickpocketing other players ftw!

I'm curious how the proliferation of virtual worlds might affect this, since from within those places are massive teams who build RTS games, full blown combat systems, RPG and LARPs and the list goes on.
Will we ever see a hybrid that takes a story and has one part game, one part social/sandbox?

In my own personal opinion I think the New Jedi Order books would be a wonderful setting for a new Star Wars MMO. You've still got recognizable characters from the original movies yet there is a lot more wiggle room in terms of what you could with that IP.

Wow, and here I thought I was the only one who loved the idea of a New Jedi Order Star Wars MMO. The Yuuzhan Vong were beings that didn't exist in the Force, making for a great foil against the Jedi. It evened out the field a little, letting the guys with guns stand a chance, as was shown numerous times in the 19-ology.

Personally I would love to see a Doctor Who MMO, I have no idea how it would work, but the developers would have all of time and space to play with.

I would love to see Battletech, Warhammer 40K and the rpg RIFTS turned into an MMO. Preferably in that order.

I loved Firefly but I don't think it would make a good MMO, the bigest story of that world has been told. IMHO same with Stargate and SWG.
Personally I'd like to see something where the story hasn't been told yet, I loved the background to Anarchy Online, but that was a wonderful example of how not to convert a Fantasy MMO engine to Sci-Fi. The story had almost nothing to do with the game content.
Something like the RPG SLA industries would be perfect for a MMO, Dark enclosed spaces, check.
Medical tech that works like resurrection, check.
Focus on H2H rather than ranged combat with a good explanation why, check.
People can act like idiots without breaking character, check
Edgy, Cyberpunk-meets-Cthulhu story, check.
Story reason for PvP, check.
