KOTOR as an MMO would destroy my social life... So either way it's a good thing.

I'm about 97% sure it's going to happen. Give or take.

I just hope they do it right, it has a lot of hype to live up to.

My fear is that it is going to be another cookie-cutter WoW clone that everyone is trying to do. I would rather see an amazing RPG with some sweet online co-op.

But I have to be honest, because if they do an MMO...yeah that is going to suck me in.

I have major mixed feelings about this, either way. In order to figure out what they're doing, you have to put yourself in their shoes.

I think the most likely scenario was that Bioware was moving ahead full steam with a Mass Effect MMO until recently, when they were purchased by EA. It's unlikely that they were developing a KotOR MMO because they didn't have the license, and you don't throw money into something that you might not be able to turn into cash.

Their recent announcement of a partnership with Lucasarts strongly suggests that they are seriously thinking about converting their MMO project into a full-on KotOR MMO. THIS MEANS NO MASS EFFECT MMO!!! Which makes me QQ inside, as much as I loved KotOR.

All of the MMO assets that they were building for the M.E. MMO are fully convertible into a KotOR MMO if they want to use them. And the _profit_ potential upside of a new (better) Star Wars MMO is much greater than an independent project.

But... MASS EFFECT HAS MORE CREATIVE POTENTIAL THAN STAR WARS!!! Star Wars is a washed-up, hashed-over universe that a million books have been written about. Star Wars is reaching the end of its lifespan as a creative property. So it absolutely makes me SICK to see Bioware abandon such a promising fresh young universe as Mass Effect in favor of a washed up George-Lucas-controlled nightmare.

KotOR was great, but it was a long time ago. Mass Effect is now, and it's fresh and new and strong and growing well.

You make an interesting point about how Mass Effect might be a less tired universe than Star Wars.

Unfortunately, I've not yet had the opportunity to play Mass Effect as I'm a PC/PS3 guy, not a 360 guy, though an old friend of mine is about to lend me his 360 and Mass Effect to play for a couple weeks because he doesn't want ME to distract him from all his student's finals that he has to grade. So soon I'll get some first hand experience with the game and we'll see if I agree.

But, on the other hand, the time period of KotOR is a much more open and potentially interesting, less-tired setting than the time period(s) of the two movie trilogies.

One of the problems with SWG is that it had to stay within the bounds of the established "movie" universe; KotOR has a bit more freedom to try something different.

So if BioWare is making a KotOR MMO, you never know, it might surprise you.

Also, the MMO is developed by a completely different studio within BioWare than Mass Effect, so I'm sure the single-player franchise will continue if it does turn out that the MMO is KotOR.

P.S. If Bioware has switched to a KotOR MMO, then it's because E.A. has forced them to take the more profitable short-term course. I don't think Bioware would have had trouble getting the KotOR MMO license if they'd wanted to make it.

So basically E.A. bought Bioware and saw that they were working on a Mass Effect MMO and told them, "Stop that right now. From now on you're working on a KotOR MMO that will make way more money than that Mass Effect crap."

:(

I personally love the idea. I loved KotOR and missed SWG pre-NGE and I've always wanted to do the whole Star Wars MMO thing. I'll definitely be watching this.
